Statue Restoration
The Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia commissioned the repainting of an antique statue of St. Catherine of Siena for their chapel in Our Lady Queen of Preachers House of Studies in Washington D.C. The approximately 5 ft. tall painted terracotta likeness of the Dominican saint had once belonged to the convent where St. Katharine Drexel lived. Over the years, the statue became worn and chipped and the veil and cappa that should have been black were a dull gray. While taking great care to leave the detailed lilies, heart, crown of thorns, and eyes untouched, the entire statue was sanded, cleaned, primed, and repainted. Missing chips in the base were reconstructed, flesh tones revivified, and new gold trim was added to replicate the original detailing.
